Finland's capital city was founded on June 12, 1550. The city was rebuilt after a great fire in 1808 into a well-planned spacious metropolis. Helsinki is first of all a city of great architecture and stunning nature.

It is unique in many ways and has much to offer to any visitor. Helsinki is different from other big historical cities by two factors: the great physical presence of nature and the very clear network pattern used to design the city's streets. Most big cities have a limited number of parks. In Helsinki, parks can be found behind almost every corner. Even in the city center, many parks have been introduced to liven up the landscape. Both - the presence of nature and the clear street pattern - are the creation of the city's two main designers, Johan Albrecht Ehrenström and Carl Ludvig Engel.

A walking tour in the city also opens your eyes to a fascinating past, which can be seen everywhere - throughout its 450-year history, Helsinki has existed in the crosscurrents of the East and West.
